Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa
16-17-18 November 2011
(at the headquarters of UAL and the headquarters of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation)

The greatest public scientific achievement of the research unit in International Relations – OBSERVARE – of the Autonomous University of Lisbon (UAL) was its first International Conference, which was held on the dates and locations listed above.

The conference was an important occasion of confluence of Portuguese and international experts in International Relations and focused on the topic “international trends and Portugal’s position”. Apart from OBSERVARE researchers and lecturers from UAL, the event was attended by many researchers from other academic centres, particularly those with which a partnership was established for the effect: the Carolina Foundation in Madrid, the NOREF in Oslo, the NICPRI from the University of Minho, the IPRI from the New University of Lisbon, the Institute for Higher Military Studies, the National Defence Institute, the Institute of International Strategic Studies, the Portuguese Network for Security Studies, and the Observatory for Gender and Armed Violence of CES of the University of Coimbra.

As the detailed programme indicates, the Conference was held in two stages: conferences and debates conducted in plenary sessions and scientific papers presented in three sections: geopolitics and security; economics and ecology; transnational social issues.

Besides the detailed programme and the list of participants, we are also making available the set of papers that the authors have since sent us, or at least the abstracts of their presentations, when authors did not send us their full texts. This important collection constitutes the Conference Proceeding and is accessible to all those interested in reading them.
