Luís Moita was born on 11 August 1939.


He has a PhD in Ethics (1967) from the Pontificia Università Lateranense (Pontifical Lateran University), Italy, awarded with the classification summa cum laude (10/10) and accredited by Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Catholic University of Portugal).


He is currently Full Professor in "Theories of International Relations", Director of the Department of International Relations, and member of the scientific council of Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL).


Between 1992 and 2009 he was Deputy ViceChancellor of UAL. He was the coordinator of the Socrates Institute for Ongoing Education at UAL and he presently directs the Research Unit OBSERVARE (Observatory for External Relations), which publishes a collection of books and two regular publications: the yearbook JANUS (published since 1997 in a co-edition with newspaper PÚBLICO) and the biannual journal JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations, published since Fall 2010.

He was Director of CIDAC, a Portuguese non-governmental organisation for development cooperation for fifteen years between 1974 and 1989. Between 1989 and 1997, he lectured the subject “Philosophy and Ethics of Social Work” at Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa (Higher Institute for Social Work of Lisbon).


He also was a Guest Associate Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (until October 1998).


He currently coordinates the Master Degree in War and Peace Studies at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and lectures the subject “Globalisation and Africa’s International Relations”, as part of the Master and Doctoral Degree in African Studies taught at the Higher Institute for Labour and Management Studies (ISCTE).

He has been a regular speaker at the National Defence course offered by the National Defence Institute since 1998. In the academic years 2004-2007 he taught at the Air Force Higher Studies Institute, and, since 2006, he has been a lecturer at the Institute for Higher Military Studies.

On 10 June 1998 he was distinguished with Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty by the President of the Republic, and on 7 January 2005 he was awarded the title Grand Officer of the Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana by Italy’s President of the Republic.
