Felipe Pathé Duarte


Felipe Pathé Duarte was born in 1980. He is assistant professor at the Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Homeland Security, and Director of Research & Analysis Global Risk Awareness, Ltd. He is also a full researcher at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminal Studies (University of Lisbon Law School), associate researcher at the Research and Development Centre for Law and Society (New University of Lisbon), and at the Research Centre of the Institute for Political Studies (Catholic University of Portugal).


Felipe holds a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the Institute for Political Studies (Catholic University of Portugal), with a thesis on al-Qaeda’s strategy and structural dynamics, and a Bachelor degree in Philosophy from the University of Coimbra, having spent one year at the Université de Toulouse, France.


In 2009/2010, he was a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College), and attended the Seminar for European Counterterrorism Experts, in Israel. In 2011, Felipe was a visiting researcher at the Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Program, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in Washington DC.  He is also Vice-President, and the spokesman, of the Portuguese Observatory for Security, Organized Crime and Terrorism. Along with it, he is member of the Sciences Academy ofLisbon – Permanent Seminar of Junior Scientists(for Political Science and International Relations)


Felipe has published widely on International Security issues, including op-eds in Portuguese newspapers and essays in international scientific journals. He is a resident international politics analyst for RTP – TV (“Olhar o Mundo”), and a regular analyst for other media. He is member of Editorial Board of the “Contemporary Sociological Global Review”, “Anatomia do Crime” (University of Lisbon) and referee of the journal “Comunicação e Marketing”, and “Revista de Relações Internacionais” (IPRI).



He is invited lecturer at the Institute of National Defence and in several training courses of the Armed Forces (General Staff and Command Course and the Promotion Course to General Officer at the Higher Institute of Military Studies, or Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Course for the Special Forces) and the Security Services (Intelligence Course, Hostage Negotiation Course of the GNR, CEPOL - Collège Européen de Police ...)..



In 2007, published a book on post-cold war terrorism, “No Crepúsculo da Razão – Considerações sobre o Terrorismo Pós-Guerra Fria” (Ed. Prefácio, 223p.). In September 2015 he published “Global Jihadism: from words to deeds" (Ed. Marcador; 311p) on jihadi strategic thought.
